Unique works of art by several Lake Travis ISD students have been selected as winners of the Lake Travis Community Library art contest held during Teen Read Week celebrated Oct. 18-24, Students in grades 6 through 12 were invited to create an original piece of 2-D art inspired by a personal reading experience, whether it be a re-working of a book cover, a depiction of a scene from a favorite book, or a character portrait.
Teen Read Week is a national adolescent literacy initiative created by the Young Adult Library Services Association.
Lake Travis High School freshman Lauren French’s chalk pastel ‘Beluga Pair’ won first prize for high school students, while Hudson Bend Middle School sixth grade student Christiana Ramos placed first in the middle school division for her painting ‘Newt’ inspired by the book Maze Runner (James Dashner).
The entries were judged by a panel of highly-respected artists in the Lake Travis community. Ann Neighbors, Ben Kuenemann, and Johnnie Fields awarded six winners and six honorable mentions. The winners were given cash prizes provided by the Friends of the Lake Travis Community Library.
“We are absolutely blown away by the 217 entries this year,” library director Morgan McMillian said. “I hope everyone in the Lake Travis community will stop by the library this month to see the impressive exhibit.”
Samuel Garvens was awarded second place for middle school students for his oil pastel ‘Life of Pi’ inspired by Yann Martel’s novel, while Avody Valencia’s portrait ‘Seelie Queen’ won third place. For high school students, sophomore Alayna Wilson was awarded second place for ‘Radiant Saphira’ inspired by the book Eragon (Christopher Paolini), while senior Claudia Watson’s painting ‘Holly Short,’ taken from the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer, won third place.
The winners of the Teen Read Week Art Contest will be displayed at Lake Travis Community Library throughout November.
