Lake Travis HS DECA School-Based Enterprise attains re-certification

The Cav Zone, a student-operated retail store located inside Lake Travis High School, has received Gold Level re-certification from the DECA School-Based Enterprise (SBE) program.

Formerly known as the Distributive Education Clubs of America, DECA prepares emerging leaders in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management with over 185,000 members around the globe.  DECA is one the largest student organizations on the Lake Travis campus with 125 members.  The Cav Zone, which opened in 2008 as part of the LTHS Institute of Business, Finance and Marketing, first received Gold Level certification in 2011.

“An SBE is an entrepreneurial operation in a school setting that provides goods and services to meet the needs of the market,” Jill Oates said, one of two LTHS DECA advisors.  “SBEs are managed and operated by students as hands-on learning laboratories that integrate national curriculum standards in marketing, finance, hospitality and management.  The LTHS Cav Zone is a wonderful example of introducing high school students to the realities of business management.  It provides students with opportunities to learn and apply business principles, develop leadership skills, experience conflict resolution and obtain real-world work experience.”

DECA’s certification program was developed to provide recognition for outstanding achievement by school-based enterprises and to motivate SBEs to strive for excellence and growth.  SBEs can be certified at three levels: Bronze, Silver or Gold.  In order to apply for certification, SBEs must submit extensive documentation that demonstrates their adherence to various marketing and retail standards.  Assisted by Ms. Oates and fellow DECA advisor Amy Johnson, LTHS DECA students Jordan Grulke and Julia Wezio completed the re-certification process.

One of 316 school stores nationally that achieved Gold Level re-certification, the Cav Zone will be recognized at the DECA International Career Development Conference in Nashville, TN in April.
