Acclaimed writer and poet Georgia Heard will feature the unique artwork of Bee Cave Elementary School third grade students Merrick Kays, Kenan Mearig and Kahnan Vigna in her upcoming book, Heart Maps: Helping Students Choose Authentic Topics and Craft Passionate Writing (published by Heinemann).
A heart map, Ms. Heard explains, is “a visual reminder of all a student loves and cares about. It expands students’ minds and helps them think broadly about what really matters. In doing so, students move away from writing about superficial topics, and travel to a deeper place inside themselves.”
Ms. Heard’s latest publication is a follow-up to her book Awakening the Heart: Exploring Poetry in Elementary and Middle School. According to Heinemann, Awakening the Heart explores how to develop the poet in elementary and middle school students through “well-drawn examples, detailed exercises, creative projects, and down-to-earth classroom teachings.” Instructor Magazine labeled the publication one of its ‘12 Books Every Teacher Should Read.’
The three students are members of Ms. Melanie Cravey’s class at Bee Cave Elementary.
