Lake Travis ISD named finalist for prestigious HEB Excellence in Education Award

Lake Travis ISD has been selected as one of three statewide finalists in the ‘Small District’ category as part of HEB’s 2017 Excellence in Education Awards program, HEB officials announced this week.

HEB launched the Excellence in Education Awards program in cooperation with the Texas Association of School Administrators in 2002 as a way to support public education in Texas. According to HEB, the awards program has become the largest monetary initiative for educators in the state, spotlighting best practices and celebrating the passion and creativity of Texas educators.  Each year, HEB recognizes teachers, principals, school districts, school boards, and early childhood centers who go the extra mile to serve their students and their communities.

Specifically, the District Award recognizes school districts for 1.) a commitment to student achievement through innovative programs; 2.) parent/community involvement; and professional development opportunities for teachers and administrators.

“While winning the award would be a wonderful compliment for our district, the mere fact that Lake Travis ISD has been named a finalist is a unique and tremendous honor in itself,” admitted Dr. Brad Lancaster, Lake Travis ISD Superintendent of Schools.

As part of the HEB awards selection process, independent judges made onsite visits to Lake Travis High School and Hudson Bend Middle School on January 26, visiting classrooms and speaking with numerous campus and student leaders.  The visit also included meetings with district administrators, parents, and community members.

“The awards process and onsite visits were great opportunities for us to showcase the amazing teaching and learning occurring in our schools every day,” added Dr. Lancaster.  “This was a very rewarding process.”

The two other finalists in the ‘Small District’ award category are Alamo Heights ISD (San Antonio) and Hutto ISD.  The winning district, which will receive $50,000, will be announced at the HEB Excellence in Education Awards ceremony May 7 at the Hilton Hotel in Austin.
