Lake Travis High School senior Tasnim Islam is the first LTHS student to be awarded top place in the annual Maryknoll Magazine Student Essay Contest. Contestants were asked to cite examples of violence and to explain how they are striving to promote peace. Tasnim’s essay described how she has worked to reverse the stigma against Muslims through personal contact and education, resulting in greater acceptance and peace.
Maryknoll representative Father Gerry Kelly presented Tasnim a $1,000 scholarship along with a letter and certificate of recognition. Tasnim’s winning essay, along with her photo, will be published in Maryknoll magazine a publication of the non-profit organization Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers.
Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers is a Catholic organization of men and women whom work, mostly overseas, with the world’s most vulnerable people. According to Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, though the motivation for their actions is faith-based, they do not seek to convert people to their religion.
